Dr. Bryce Basques, MD

Board-Certified Spine Surgeon | Brown University — University Orthopedics

Serving Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut & All of New England

Biography

Dr. Bryce Basques, MD is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopaedic spine surgeon at Brown University, serving as Director of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery at University Orthopedics. He is one of New England's leading experts in minimally invasive, endoscopic, robotic, and disc replacement spine surgery.

Dr. Basques specializes in the full spectrum of spinal conditions, including disc herniations, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, spinal deformity (scoliosis), spine trauma, and spinal tumors. His practice emphasizes motion-preservation techniques and outpatient surgery whenever possible, helping patients from Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and across the Northeast return to active lives faster.

After earning his undergraduate degree from the University of Miami, Dr. Basques completed his medical doctorate (MD) and Master of Health Science (MHS) at Yale School of Medicine. He then completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, where he served as a team physician for the Chicago Bulls (NBA) and Chicago White Sox (MLB).

Dr. Basques pursued advanced fellowship training in spine surgery at the Rothman Institute / Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, one of the nation's premier spine surgery programs. During fellowship, he served as a team physician for the Philadelphia Eagles (NFL), Philadelphia Phillies (MLB), and Philadelphia 76ers (NBA), gaining extensive experience managing spine conditions in elite athletes.

In Rhode Island, Dr. Basques has established himself as a pioneer in advanced spine surgery techniques. He performed Rhode Island's first Mazor X robotic spine surgery and is one of only a handful of surgeons in all of New England offering true endoscopic spine surgery — a technique that uses a fiberoptic camera the size of a ballpoint pen through a tiny incision, allowing most patients to go home the same day.

An active researcher, Dr. Basques has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications, received NIH grant funding, and serves on the NASS Research Funding Committee and Clinical Practice Guideline Committee. His research spans robotic surgery, minimally invasive techniques, telemedicine, return-to-play outcomes, and patient safety in spine surgery.
