Lumbar Stenosis
Narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back causing leg pain, heaviness, and difficulty walking. Dr. Basques offers the full range of minimally invasive decompression and stabilization procedures.
Lumbar spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back that compresses the nerve roots and/or spinal cord. It most commonly develops gradually with age as degenerative changes — disc bulging, facet joint enlargement, and ligament thickening — reduce the space available for nerves. The hallmark symptom is neurogenic claudication: leg pain, heaviness, cramping, or numbness that occurs with walking or standing and is relieved by sitting or leaning forward (like pushing a shopping cart). Unlike vascular claudication, symptoms are positional and relieved by spinal flexion. Lumbar stenosis is one of the most common reasons for spine surgery in older adults, and Dr. Basques specializes in minimally invasive decompression techniques that provide relief with less tissue disruption and faster recovery.
Common Symptoms
Diagnosis
Dr. Basques performs a thorough neurological examination including assessment of gait, strength, sensation, and reflexes. MRI clearly demonstrates the degree and levels of canal narrowing. X-rays evaluate alignment, instability, and deformity. In selected cases, CT myelography may be used if MRI is contraindicated.
