Scoliosis
An abnormal sideways curvature of the spine. Dr. Basques evaluates and treats both adolescent and adult scoliosis with a comprehensive, individualized approach.
Scoliosis is a three-dimensional spinal deformity involving abnormal sideways curvature and rotation of the spine. It can occur in children and adolescents (most commonly idiopathic scoliosis), or develop in adulthood (degenerative or de novo scoliosis). Adult scoliosis often results from asymmetric disc and facet joint degeneration, causing progressive curvature, stenosis, and pain. While mild curves may be observed, progressive or symptomatic scoliosis can cause significant back pain, leg pain, posture changes, and in severe cases, impaired lung function. Dr. Basques provides expert surgical correction for complex spinal deformities, combining deformity correction with decompression and fusion techniques tailored to each patient's unique curve pattern and symptoms.
Common Symptoms
Diagnosis
Standing full-spine X-rays (PA and lateral) measure the Cobb angle and assess curve pattern. MRI evaluates for underlying spinal cord abnormalities (especially in adolescent scoliosis). CT provides detailed bony anatomy for surgical planning. Flexibility X-rays (bending films) determine curve rigidity. Dr. Basques obtains comprehensive imaging to plan the most appropriate treatment.
